Signed bottom left: Kövér Gyula Padova 17.
At the beginning of 1914 Kövér was awarded the József Ferencz scholarship and immediately set off on a study trip abroad (Bavaria, Würtemberg, Alsace, Belgium and Holland). The First World War came to him in Belgium.
He was a war painter at the 10th Defence Force Squadron, who were posted to Italy. Kövér captured the events of the battlefield and memories of his travels in numerous oil paintings, watercolours and pencil drawings. A memoir mentions that when the Hungarian War Council decided to abandon the Italian front, the 10th DFS was not informed. So they stayed instead of retreating and were taken prisoner of war.
