The legend of the white horse (End of the 18th century)

According to the legend of the white horse, Árpád sent ambassadors to the Danube region. They brought gifts, including a white horse with golden harness, for which they asked for land, grass, and water in return. The local ruler, thinking that subjects seeking permission to settle had arrived, granted the request. Árpád replied that he would have to leave his land immediately, because he had sold his entire country to the Hungarians for the white horse, the golden saddle and bridle. According to the legend, the Hungarians gained their new homeland in the Carpathian Basin with this ruse.
