About

Héjjas became a member of the Kecskemét artists' colony in its second major period (1920-1945). At that time, the conservative conception of art of Imre Révész, who took over the leadership of the colony, left his mark on the colony's everyday-life. Most of the landscape and genre painting were outdated. However, some artists managed to free themselves from Révész's retrograde style, as is demonstrated by the expressive works of István Szőnyi, Imre Nagy, Vladimir Szabó and Héjjas. The latter's painting entitled Mourning also evokes a certain social sensitivity. The puritanism of the interior, the neutralizing pastel colours, the strange cropping, the larger homogeneous fields of colour and the shocking, psychologically deepened theme make Héjjas' work comparable to the paintings of Gyula Derkovits.
