About

Fenyő was one of the founding members of the Socialist Artists' Group, which was established in 1934. He settled in Finland in 1938, then in Sweden, and returned to Hungary only in 1947. In the same year he exhibited his paintings in Sweden at the Free Organization of Hungarian Artists.

In the Window was probably painted by Fenyő during his emigration. With this composition he is able to depict both interior and exterior space, as well as movement and temperature differences. The window sill runs parallel to the diagonal of the picture, as does the couple skiing outside or the row of plants in the room, and their counterpoint is the figure of the seated woman perpendicular to them, radiating static, or the trees lined up outside - creating a sense of downward, sliding movement. The composition's grittiness and tension is further enhanced by its spiky linework, which resembles the needle-like leaves of a pine needle.
