János Schnitzler

Biography

He was born in 1908, in a Jewish family. He was member of the Group of Socialist Visual Artists. Due to his graphic inclinations, he was the group's first draftsman and illustrator with great talent. Thematically, he was connected to the  the group, but stylistically, he developed a powerful and individual, expressive-surreal language. His best-known works are his series of linoleum engravings, which appear in the literature under the title 'Dread-cycle' (1938-1940). In 1944, at the age of only 36, he became a victim of fascism.
