About

A famous but undeservedly forgotten figure of the Hungarian Art Deco movement was József Gróf, whose importance was only brought to attention by an exhibition organised by the Museum of Applied Arts in 1985. He was a direct collaborator of Lajos Kozma and Gyula Kaesz in the Interior Design Workshop he founded with Sándor Faragó. It was in the early 1920s that the Count came to the realisation that the roots of neo-baroque furniture art of the highest artistic quality in Hungary could be found only in the 17th and 18th century relics of furniture art in the Highlands. The Count's own designs were influenced by these stylistic features - his works are now protected by the Museum of Applied Arts. He also produced important works as a commercial artist. His surviving works show the influence of French and German expressionist poster art.
