Detre's creative activity in the 1920s was determined by the surroundings of the École de Paris, the voyeuristic approach to nightlife, and the themes of the bohemian world of Toulouse-Lautrec. In the 1930s, Dertre founded a puppet theater with his wife, Claire Carnat, which allowed him to travel a lot around the country and perpetuate the characters of theatrical life. He created the Ballet dancer in this period. In his last creative era, he moved to the area of Moulins, where his pastel paintings were inspired by the tranquility of the countryside and the family environment.
