About

Jaschik created this work for the 1934 competition of the City of Budapest, where the aim was to promote the capital city by using "permanent badges" (signets) that are easy to remember and immediately remind people of the city. "The right solution for a signet requires, on the one hand, great conciseness, striking interest and expressiveness, and on the other hand, a distinguished calmness, a pleasing overall appearance and easy printing. The signet must include the name Budapest. Otherwise, it is up to the artist to decide how to design it, but it would seem desirable to extract a characteristic feature from the image of the capital and use it on the badge, reworking it to suit the purpose and presentation. This characteristic feature could be, in particular, to emphasise the special location on the Danube, in a more symbolic or stylised form, of course. A generous summary rather than a reproduction of details, - a depiction of nature rather than a representation of the actual features, confining the indication to the main features of the impression, and conscious omission and emphasis are the guiding criteria in the preparation of the designs," they wrote in the tender.
