Alice Endresz

1899 - 1953

Biography

Between 1916 and 1923, Alice Endresz attended the College of Fine Arts in Budapest, where  János Vaszary and Lajos Deák-Ébner were her masters. In 1931, she participated in the founding of the New Group of the Hungarian Women's Artists' Association, and then became a member of the New Eight, together with Berta Wabrosch, Márton Piroská Futásfalvi, Anna Bartoniek, Angéla Szuly, Ilona Hranitzky, Margit Muzslai Kampis and Erzsébet Loránt.

Endresz's artistic style could be linked to art deco and, according to the reports of contemporary critics, to the expressionism of Die Brücke and primitivism, which stylistic trends were not present in Hungary before. Her art was characterized by genre-like, slightly grotesque, but mostly cheerful, dynamic compositions. She liked to paint around Lake Balaton, where she originally came from.

In 1999, the Hungarian National Gallery organized an exhibition on the work of female painters of the time, which also featured the art works of Endresz Alice.
