Biography

Viktor Erdei (Epstein; 1879–1945) painter, graphic artist, sculptor. He graduated from the commercial academy, then in the summer of 1899 he worked at Simon Hollósy's free school in Nagybánya. He later studied with Bertalan Székely and then with Károly Ferenczy at the Nagybánya settlement. He continued his education in Munich in 1908 and 1909 and in Paris in 1912. He participated in exhibitions from 1907, at which time he organized a collection exhibition in Budapest, in 1911 in Nagyvárad, and in 1912 in Szeged. In 1907, he published a collection of lithographs, Eros immaterialis, and in 1918 he made lithographs for Béla Révész's book, Beethoven Miniatures.

 

After 1919, he emigrated to Vienna, then in 1924 he moved to Nagyszőllős, and for a decade living in the vicinity of Ungvár and Munkács, he studied the life and ancient traditions of the Jews there. In 1934, he organized a collection exhibition of his drawings on this subject in the Ernst Museum. From the mid-1930s, he lived and worked in seclusion in Budapest. A memorial exhibition of his works was organized in 1948. His art is the so-called It was related to the style of the representatives of the Society of Spiritual Painters.
