Biography

Jenő György Remsey (Nagykőrös, November 2, 1885 - Gödöllő, July 26, 1980) Hungarian painter, graphic artist, newspaper editor, writer.

 

He studied in Budapest, Vienna and Munich, and then became a member of the Gödöllő artists' colony working in the spirit of Art Nouveau. He made decorative paintings and carpet designs. He was a member of an art association called KÉVE and a founding member of the Association of Spiritual Artists, founded in 1924. In his paintings he was preoccupied with the question of the painting, enhancing, and spiritual meaning of light. As he lived in Gödöllő for the rest of his life, he nurtured the intellectual traditions of the Gödöllő artists' colony and preserved many of his memories.

 

He graduated from high school in Budapest, then worked as a clerk between 1905 and 1909 and studied art at the School of Industrial Design. The influence of József Rippl-Rónai can be seen in his first works. With the support of Finnish painter Ansel Gallén-Kallela, she received a three-year state scholarship. Between 1909 and 1914, he worked at the Gödöllő Art Colony, where he brought biblical themes and the subject of the Hungarian fairy tale under the direction of Aladár Körösfői-Kriesch. In 1909 he became a member of the Association of Hungarian Fine and Applied Artists. He was on a study trip to Munich in 1911 and 1914.

 

Between 1921 and 1940, he also published three volumes of poetry and some of his plays. In 1924, he established the Society of Spiritual Artists. In 1932, he founded the newspaper of the Association of Spiritual Artists, which was banned in 1935. Between 1937 and 1941, he became a member of the National Observatory, a Catholic and liberal civilian press. Between 1942 and 1943, he painted the fresco of the ceremonial hall of the Reformed High School on Lónyai Street, The Spiritual History of the Hungarian Reformation. In 1954 he became a member of the Szinyei Creative Community. In 1960, he became a member of the Creative Community of Etching Artists.
