About

Klára Róna's pastel painting was probably made at Christmas 1939, just a few months after the outbreak of World War II. The scene may depict a vision: the strange composition (with the figures in the foreground and the snowy urban streetscape in the background); the symbolic figures (the dark, sinister figure on the left and the young woman with her hands as if blessing the tree), who seem to be opposites.
