About

Christ on the Cross is a colourful design by Lily Sztehlo for the stained glass window of the Church in Győr-gyárváros. This church is considered to be the first modern style church in the country, designed by Aladár and Bertalan Árkay. It was decorated with 29 large glass windows by Árkayné Sztehlo Lili, which won a gold medal at the Monza World Exhibition in 1930. 'She never sought easy success, although glass gives her the opportunity. The fiery colours, the perfection of the compositions and the simple inspired presentation of the glass windows of the Győr Gyárvárosi church make them a reminder of church art. There is no superfluous detail, everything on them is as simple as the Scriptures'', wrote one of the reviewers. In April 1944 the church was heavily bombed and the magnificent stained glass windows were destroyed. They were replaced in 1979.
