About

János Schadl's art took a turn in the 1930s. In his drawings in brown ink and walnut wood he approaches the naturalistic, seeking beautiful, cool, simple harmonies. His style at this time is close to the post-impressionist art of Aurél Bernáth and Róbert Berény. The 1966 Schadl article in the magazine Művészet aptly mentions the name of Van Gogh. In his work Chair with a Bag, Schadl depicts ordinary, everyday objects in various shades of brown. The slightly overhead and narrowly cropped wooden chair with the simple woman's (?) bag on it is reminiscent of the Dutch painter's straw-chair paintings.
