Biography

From 1925 to 1930, he was a student of István Csók, István Réti and János Vaszary at the Academy of Fine Arts. He went on several study trips to Vienna, Paris, Poland, Germany, and Italy. He became acquainted with the new art trends in Berlin in 1931. After returning home, he drew flyers as a member of the illegal communist party and was imprisoned twice. He was a founding member of the Group of Socialist Artists, established in 1934, and later worked as a member of the Independent Stage. In 1944, he founded and organized the communist Szikra Publishing House in Szeged, and for a year from 1945 he headed the cultural sub-department at the center of the communist party. He also worked as a professional writer, and between 1945 and 1948 he was a critic of Szabad Nép.
