Biography

He studied painting in Budapest in 1904-1905 at the College of Applied Arts, then at the College of Fine Arts, and furthered his education in Vienna, Munich, Rome and Paris. . From 1908, his paintings appeared in the exhibitions of the Art Gallery and the National Salon.

After the First World War, in 1921, he emigrated to the United States of America. He settled in Buffalo, New York. Petőfi's portrait can be seen in the Hungarian church in Buffalo, and he painted the mural Saint Stephen Among the Pagans for the Saint Stephen's Church in Los Angeles.

In 1932 Kende settled in Los Angeles, where he spent the remainder of his life. Throughout his career he painted commissioned portraits of many notable actors and figures of the time, including actress Clara Bow. Kende was a member of the California Art Club, Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles, and the Society of Western Artists. His work was exhibited with the Society for Sanity in Art in Los Angeles (1943-1945), the American Artists Professional League (1945), Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles (1945) and the Oakland Art Gallery (1946).
