Mária Lehel

1889 - 1973

Biography

Between 1906 and 1914, Mária Lehel studied with Károly Ferenczy and then with Béla Iványi Grünwald. She has participated as a guest in the exhibitions of the Eight, has been featured in all the exhibitions at the House of Artists and has exhibited several times at Ernst Museum. Initially, many elements of her paintings reflected the style of the masters of Nagybánya. After the First World War, she worked with pastel technique, mainly creating still lifes and landscapes. The influence of her years in France from the 1920s defined her work: she started to paint softer, more decorative, lighter images.

She studied modern painting of the turn of the century in Paris, was a follower of Matisse, and met Marc Chagall and Jules Pascin, among others. From 1939 she lived mainly in Italy, but often returned home. Many of her works were destroyed in World War II. She traveled to Europe between 1946 and 1973, during which time she had numerous exhibitions in Genoa, Milan, Rome, London and Sao Paolo.
