Detail of Prague (1917 után)

Born in Jindrichov Hradec in southern Bohemia, Marie Provázková (Mária Lanow) was a student of Hollósy and had already visited Nagybánya (Baia Mare) in 1901. In 1906, she met her future husband, Sándor Galimberti, in Paris, and from 1907 they shared a beautifully furnished apartment at 114 Boulevard Montparnasse. where Vlaminck, Derain and Modigliani, with whom they maintained friendly relations, were frequent visitors. Mrs. Galimberti worked initially in the "La Palette" studio in Rue du Val-de-Grace and later in the studio of Léger, whom she considered her master all along. She exhibited her paintings first in the "Autumn Salon" and then in the "Salon des Independants".

By 1911 the marriage had broken up, Lanow travelled to Spain and Italy, then worked alternately in Paris, Nagybánya, and in Kecskemét, where she became friends with the Perlrott couple. She survived the First World War in the French capital, only learning of her former husband's death afterwards, which was very upsetting to her. Although she kept in touch with Hungarian artists, and her illustrations appeared in both of Kassák's magazines (MA, A Tett), she did not return to Hungary, but moved to Prague in 1917. The Detail of Prague s a beautiful example of Lanow's bold use of colour, combining Fauve and Cubist stylistic features.
