Biography
György Almár, originally known as György Fränkel, was an architect, decorator, painter, and graphic designer.
He enlisted after graduation and fought through World War I as an artilleryman. He graduated from the Budapest University of Technology in 1920 with an architectural engineering degree. He then worked for several years in Berlin, where he studied painting, and then got to know modern, functionalist interior design in an architectural office. He returned home in 1923, worked for Pál Ligeti, and then opened his own office in 1924. He mainly dealt with the design and furnishing of small apartments and family houses. At the same time, he was an active member of the modern art group around the MENTOR bookstore and of KUT. His books published in the 1930s dealing with modern housing culture are significant. In addition to furniture design, he was also involved in the creation of unique wallpaper images.
After World War II, he worked at the Institute of Architecture, the Ministry of Construction, and then the Housing Plan. Edited by Építés Építeszet magazine. He retired in 1955, and from then on he lived for painting. After painting naturalistic landscapes and still lifes, he gradually switched to creating abstract images. His pictures have been exhibited in England and Germany.
