Biography

Hungarian painter János Apátfalvi Czene was born on October 24, 1904 in Budapest. After completing his high school studies, he enrolled at the Royal Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, where his teachers were Gyula Rudnay, Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl, and István Csók. His first exhibition was in 1926. He had exhibitions at the Ernst Museum in 1930, at the Műterem in 1938, at the Műcsarnok in 1939, and at the Műbarát in 1941. He also participated in the 1938 Venice Biennale. Partly in recognition of his successes in Italy, he received a scholarship from the City of Budapest in 1938-1939, allowing him to work at the Hungarian Institute in Rome for a year. During his stay there, he made study trips to Florence, Naples, and Venice. For his work, he was awarded the honorary diploma of the “Szinyei Társaság” in 1930. He died on November 23, 1984. After his death, his paintings were featured several times in exhibitions dealing with the history of the “Roman School” in Hungary. A significant part of his works can be found in private collections and museums in Hungary and abroad.
