Biography

Berkovits studied at Álmos Jaschik’s design school. After graduating, she was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts (1926–1930), studying in János Vaszary’s class In 1929/30, she won a scholarship to Paris, where she studied at the Académie Moderne under Fernand Léger. Although she completed her studies there, she realized that without true inspiration, technical skills alone were not enough, so she chose ceramics over painting. After a romantic disappointment, she went to New York to visit relatives and started working with ceramics. She quickly found success, even opening her own studio, and made ceramic heads for Macy’s department store displays. After a year and a half, she returned to Hungary and joined her sister, Berkovits Anna, in her ceramics workshop. Together with their friend Éva Gáldi, they worked under the brand name “Bégébé,” producing applied arts and participating in both commercial and group exhibitions. She later married and emigrated with her husband to the United States in 1937 due to the rise of fascism. There she established a successful ceramics studio and interior design business, creating elegant furniture and interior pieces for prestigious shops and clients, particularly on Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue.
