György Fenyő

1904 - 1978

Biography

György Fenyő grew up in a rather fortunate, refreshingly effervescent intellectual environment thanks to his father, Miksa Fenyő, the founder and editor of the magazine Nyugat. Almost all the charismatic figures of the magazine belonged to his family's immediate circle of friends; the cosmopolitan nature of the intellectual recipient based on the enlightened, humane values of the West also influenced the defining figures of the fine arts. He continued his studies at the Munich and Dresden academies, although it most strongly affected his career. The main reason for this is that Fenyő's first masters, Róbert Berény and János Kmetty, themselves had a French orientation based on Cézanne's principles. His life's work was most influenced by the art of Cézanne, Matisse, Van Gogh and the stylistic features of the École de Paris. (Magdolna Hársfalvi)
